Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This is a valuable time to educate your students, faculty, and staff about the pervasiveness of sexual violence and the measures they can take to prevent and address it in your community. According to RAINN, 26.4% of female undergraduates and 6.8% of male undergraduates experience rape or sexual assault. A CDC study on youth risk behavior found that approximately 10% of high school students were sexually assaulted in 2017. Unfortunately, the ACLU reports that more than 95% of campus rapes are not reported. 

As a result of the pandemic, some community members may be living at home with an abuser and at a higher risk for sexual violence, while others may be grappling with prior trauma. Additionally, as students increasingly rely on online learning and communication channels, including social media platforms, they may face online harassment. Tips to Protect Your Institution with Vector LiveSafe

  1. Share information with students, faculty, and staff about how Vector LiveSafe can be used to report incidents of sexual assault and harassment.

  2. Emphasize that Vector LiveSafe tips can be submitted anonymously, including for sensitive issues like sexual assault. Support and resources can still be provided to anonymous reporters. 

  3. Include sexual assault prevention resources and FAQs and important contact information, such as Campus Security, Health Centers, support groups, etc. in the Resources section of Vector LiveSafe Mobile App.

  4. Use two-way chat to provide resources or collect additional information from community members submitting reports of sexual assault, even if the reporter wishes to remain anonymous and/or not file an official report.
